Our U.S. 21st Special Forces Group AVIATION & SCUBA School:
Written by "Doc Kaffenberger" who personally logged 4,000+ SCUBA Dives, as a "Green Beret" SCUBA Instructor, and SCUBA Instructor to Civilians, Kids to Adults; SCUBA is a real blast, but get "certified training" before you attempt it! |

Here you see 2 of our "Petty Officers" from the U.S. NAVY, who are assigned to our Instructor Group. They are inspecting and preparing a Double Tank (double compressed air "cylinder") SCUBA rig, with a "Double Hose SCUBA Regulator". One hose ("supply hose") supplies compressed air to the mouthpiece, the second hose is the "exhaust hose" that returns air to the circular "pressure regulator" (where both hose originate from). The "pressure regulator" breaks the high pressure in the SCUBA cylinders down to a safe breathable "intermediate pressure", then upon human "demand", flows air into the "supply hose". The hoses are orange color, because this rig is for STUDENTS undergoing training here. The orange color makes it easier for Instructors to identify student SCUBA Divers, and aids Instructor observations to detect any student difficulties early on. This is called an "Open Circuit SCUBA" rig, because it exhausts the used air that the diver has already breathed in & out, into the surrounding water, leaving a stream of air bubbles. This rig is identical to the design theory of the original SCUBA systems first designed by Jacque Cousteau & Emil Gagnon during World War 2. This is new equipment, madfe to treain our Students in a wide range of SCUBA diving gear; however we have many more modern designs of gear available, including "Single Hose Open Circuit SCUBA" rigs. The "Single Hose" SCUBAs use a single hose as the "supply hose" to the diver, and exhausted air is merely breathed out into the surrounding water, from venting off to the sides of the "second stage regulator" (gripped in the diver's mouth). |

More gear to issue out to a Student SCUBA Diver. |

Here he is, with full Neoprene Rubber "Wet Suit". |

U.S. Navy "Chief Petty Officer". |
Closed Circuit "Draeger" Rebreather

Here our Navy "Petty Officers" are preparing a "Draeger" Closed Circuit Rebreather SCUBA to be issued to this Rescue Diver. |

The Rescue Diver serves part time in the "U.S. Navy Reserve", and has a fulltime job as a FireFighter, who is specially trained to rescue people from water dangers. |

We are pretesting the "Draeger" to make certain that our Diver is getting great flow of SCUBA compressed air! |

The Diver signals that he has a good "seal" around his Mask, so water won't be leaking in. |
Kirby Morgan Bandmask, with Superlite Helmet

Our young hero, is ready to be fitted with the Helmet of a Water Knight! |

A "Kirby-Morgan BandMask", full face Mask, equipped with the addition of a "Superlite" Diving Helmet, to protect the Diver's Skull and Brain. |

This Diver is off on a "Salvage Mission" to recover lost items, and to do repairs underwater. He has a SCUBA cylinder strapped to him as emergency backup air supply, in case the hoses up to the surface (to his "Hookah" air compressor) should be accidentally cut during heavy work around sharp pieces of sunken ships, oil wells, etc. |

Checking the amount of air pressure in his SCUBA Cylinder. |

"Chief" checks out the functionality of the "Hookah" air compressor; and adjusts it for great performance! |

The "Mark V" U.S. Navy Divers' Helmet, offers excellent protection to the Head and Shoulders of our working Deep Diver. |

This helmet is strong, and obviously heavy. We balance this by applying a "Weight Belt" around him near his waistline; and weighted Boots to keep his feet from coming up over his Head while he is underwater! |

Helping him stand up. |

To maintain his "slot" (job) as Mark V Diver, he must be able to walk 12 full steps in this gear (out of water) without anyone touching and aiding him. |

Both of the U.S. Navy "Petty Officers" coaching him, have personally done this many times, over several years as Divers. This young Sailor tries really hard, and has a great attitude; so both coaches really are encouraging him to pass this test! |

This "U.S. Navy SEAL" used "skin diving gear" to swim on (or just below) the surface of the water, from his assault boat to the shoreline. Now he crawls up from the edge quietly. |

He is being watched! |

Yes, observed and graded by a SEAL Instructor...... |

We know THAT "SEAL Student"..... He's no student.... He is "Rudy Boesch" U.S. Navy "BullFrog" SEAL. He joined U.S. Navy "U.D.T." during World War 2.... when "Underwater Demolition Team" was a brand new thing! |
