60mm Mortar

"Ten Packs" of 60mm Mortar Shells.

CPL "Red Parker" low crawls forward and upward, into a 60mm Mortar (2 gun "Battery") position that he is building up. He is using his "packboard" to carry forward sufficient supplies of Ammunition, like this Ammunition Crate with 10 "HE" (High Explosive) 60mm Mortar shells.

Corporal ("CPL") Red Parker already has three 60mm HE mortar rounds ready for each gun. Soon he will use his "bayonet" (a knife that has a device allowing it to be attached to the front end of a rifle (off to the side, not blocking the path of bullets coming out of the rifle's "barrel"), improving the rifle into a "Spear", instead of just a "Club", in case you run out of bullets, or have to fight in "close combat"), or something else like a crowbar, to pry off the lid of this Ammunition Crate, and get these 10 mortar shells ready for firing, upon demand. Right now, he is crawling back to retrieve some Sandbags to encircle his gun position and make it safer for himself, and to get a "Field Telephone" [with wires connecting the Telephone to the "Fire Direction Center" (FDC) at his Company's "Headquarters"].

When "opposing forces" (OPFOR) have put some American Soldiers into danger, those Soldiers can then make a "radiotelephone (a radio, doesn't need wires to connect it) call" or a "Field Telephone (wired in) call" to the Artillery "Fire Direction Center" and tell them about the dangers they have, and get help. The "FDC" will ask the Soldiers some quick concise questions about: WHAT the target is (Tanks, Infantry, a Machinegun "pillbox", enemy planes parked on the ground, a fuel dump, etc.)...WHERE the enemy "target" is on the earth's surface (can be an enemy ship on water)...WHERE the FRIENDLY Soldiers are (so our Firing at the enemies, can and will be designed so as to keep our Soldiers SAFE from their own Artillery's Firings), etc..

Then, one of our Soldiers who called up the "FDC" (sort of like calling "911" for emergency help) stays on the phone, to continue to observe the enemy position (the "target"). When our Friendly Artillery (nicknamed "Redlegs" or "Cannon Cockers") fires its "shots", the Soldier on the phone (who was or still is in danger from the enemies, or might become in danger if the artillery fire was not successful) can tell the "FDC" what the effect of the first round of Friendly Artillery Firings was. Was it landed in the wrong place, too far away, or pretty close but not perfectly a DIRECT HIT? Was it ON TARGET but we still need some more SHOTS to solve the problem? The "FDC" will stay on the Phone with the Soldier in danger until the enemy problem "target" is resolved, by neutralization or destruction, so it is no longer a combat threat to our Soldiers and/or their mission.

Once the Artillery "FDC" has calculated the mathematics of the "firing problem", it will call up (by radiotelephone or "field phone" whatever Friendly Artillery units as are available (not "busy" already) and as are appropriate to "shell" (fire at) the designated enemy "target" we are focusing on. The appropriate Artillery unit selected may be one, or several, Artillery "batteries", of "Mortars" or "Howitzers" (both types of guns can elevate their gun "barrel"  to fire bullets in a high "arc" (curve) sort of like a baseball player hits a high "fly ball"....and they can fire for various distances, depending upon what the capabilities of the selected weapon(s) are.

Some Artillery units may be ordered to fire "Illumination" rounds, to add LIGHT in the sky, so during night our Soldiers can see the enemy "targets" better. Some Artillery units may be ordered to fire "Smoke" rounds, to help hide the position of our Friendly Soldiers, because the enemies probably won't be able to see our Soldiers as well, if they have to try to look through clouds of dense "smoke" landed between the enemies and our Soldiers. Some units may be ordered to fire "HE" rounds (big high explosive bullets) directly at the enemy "targets" to try to destroy, or at least weaken them, until they no longer pose a threat to our Soldiers (or, at least for awhile, until the enemy finishes repairs). Likely, shelling the enemy targets, will allow our Soldiers on the ground, to sneak past the enemies and go on and achieve their "mission(s)", or to get free from being held in danger (like being "in check" on a "chessboard") by that enemy "target(s)".

Our U.S. Soldier, CPL Red Parker, is setting up one of those Artillery "batteries" (  a "battery" is a group of two or more "guns" working together, that may be assigned to fire all at the same target, or each firing at different targets. Parker's Battery is a "Mortar Battery" of 60mm Mortars. The U.S. (United States Of America) standardly uses three sizes of Mortars, measured by how big around the diameter of the "gun tube" (weapon barrel) is. Nowadays, the diameter is measured in "millimeters" (a millimeter is one thousandths of a meter, a meter is 39 inches), abbreviated as "mm". There are U.S. 60mm Mortars, 81mm Mortars, and 120mm Mortars. The 120mm Mortar has a "gun tube" that has a diameter that is 20mm longer than a standard 100mm Cigarette. In other words, as wide as 1.2 (100mm) cigarettes stacked straight line, end to end. The larger the diameter that the Mortar Tube is, the longer the shell is also, the more explosive propellant it takes to launch the shell and throw it into high angle long distance flight, the more "charge" (its load of Illuminating stuff, load of smoke powders, or load of fragmenting explosives, to land and cause effect on the target) it can carry, and the bigger around the circle of damage or destruction will be (measured from the IMPACT of the shell as the "pivot" (center) of the circle of damage). Against a small target, or if "friendly forces" are close to the "target", the FDC would choose to fire smaller diameter Mortars at the Targets. These 60mm Mortars might actually be Artillery units that are "organic" (contained within) your own Infantry unit, etc....in fact, they will be Infantrymen like you, specially trained on how to operate one or more kinds of "Heavy Weapons", such as the 60mm Mortar, .50 M2HB Browning Machinegun, 90mm Recoilless Rifle, and possible others.  Their weapon loads carried on their backs, will often be heavier than yours (if you are a light weapons infantryman, but just like you, they are very important to the survival of your unit and Soldiers. They will of course be moving slower than you, so you will have to slow down and move with them somewhat apart from them and quietly, guarding them. They depend on you to "cover" them, cause if you do, then when YOU have a big problem endangering YOU, your Heavy Weapons brothers can quickly help rescue you from your dangers. Best idea? Make friends with them, and get them to teach YOU how to operate everything they can operate. If they get wounded or hurt, immediately get medical aid for them or supply care to them, and get that "heavy weapon" back into operation rapidly; It can end the fight in favor of your good guys.

A "60mm Mortar" FIRE MISSION for "Red Parker" and his 2 Gun Battery of Mortars?

Good thing that we were just delivered fresh Ammunition Crates!

10 pack, from the Side View.

Our "Ten pack" holds just exactly that.....

Find them >>> HERE <<<!

Four "U.S. Paratroopers" have landed very close together, and it appears this was their intention...so

we can assume they must be a "heavy weapons crew" or another type of Squad that works closely together.

The "Jumper" opens up his "Weapons Container", and we can observe a

"U.S. M1 Carbine" and something additional behind it.

This "U.S. Paratrooper" removes his "U.S. M1 Carbine" and we can then

see a 60mm Mortar "gun tube" deeper within the "Weapons Container".

He is then a "Mortar Gunner".

Another "Jumper" has landed safely....

This "U.S. Paratrooper" opens up his padded "Weapons Container", and the contents therein tell us what his job is.

This young Sergeant (a "Mortar section NCO") pulls his "primary personal weapon" from the "Weapons Container".

Since he also serves on a "Heavy Weapons Gun Crew", he also has transported a component of that Heavy Weapon....

a Bipod (2 legged) "Transit" and a "Sight" for a 60mm Mortar.

You can observe the "slot" in the "magazine well" of this weapon. The "slot" mates up with a ridge running lengthwise

on the backside of the magazine. This allows a Soldier to efficiently reload this weapon even in darkness.

He firmly shoves the 30 round "stick magazine" into the "magazine well" of the "M1A1 Thompson Submachinegun" until he hears/feels a "positive click", telling him the magazine is engaged, and will not fall out unless he pushes the "magazine release".

The "Mortar section NCO" is looking for:

His "Baseplate Carrier" first;

and then to observe any potential "threat" targets he may see.

He may have been briefed in advance on known targets near the "DZ", so he will locate those targets by

finding "landmarks" in the terrain and improvements on the land.

Close up of the 60mm Mortar bipod "Transit".

This "U.S. Paratrooper" is the "Mortar Baseplate Man". He lands heavy, laden by the weight of the Mortar Baseplate....

but the upshot is that his parachute never fails to deploy fully, because he is NOT "too light in his buttocks" to get the job done.

He is a MAN by choice! (MAN = "Martial Artist of the Nation"....a KNIGHT)...

a WOMAN cares for the "Wounds Of the Martial Artist of her Nation"...she is his NURSE.

Without her KNIGHT and his NURSE combinations (marriages) , the Nation fails to survive and gain

"reinforcements" (new Kids). In functional enlightened ("A=Z") "cultures" little is done to obstruct functional families...and

MUCH is done to train and encourage the developing families towards being "functional".

In "backwards ( "Z-A" ) cultures", stupified/dysfunctional "society" will prey upon families.  Often, this is really done

as a weapon of chaosed, insurgent "ethnicities" attacking a Nation from within (during "low intensity combat)...

Rather than attack the "target" Nation...they could just JOIN it and help build and strengthen it, and become known for doing

such....but that ideology requires good brain cells and "common sense".

"Naturalized Citizens" are (supposed to be) those who have learned, and do work, the "Nature of Allies" of their host Nation.

Thus, they are allowed to join, as fully empowered Citizens, and may remain for their lifetime, in their new Homeland.

This Soldier is young and strong, and a weightlifter. He selected himself to serve as "Mortar Baseplate Carrier",

because no Mortar action can work to defend his Brothers until the Baseplate has been emplaced. He knows that

his performance of duty, is essential to his Mortar Squad, to the accomplishment of the unit's "mission(s)",

and to the very survival of his Unit. He is a KNIGHT, who chooses NOT to fail his "American Brothers".

If the "U.S. Paratroopers" intend to hold their initial "Drop Zone" position, then rather than "humping" the Baseplate

some distance away, the Mortar "Baseplate Carrier" (who often also serves as "Ammo bearer #1"), will remove

the Mortar "baseplate" from the "Baseplate Carrying Bag" and position it facing towards any expected, or actual, "targets".

Should he see more than one potential "target" he will select the closest or most dangerous "target" to aim his Baseplate towards.

The Mortar "Baseplate" is kinda heavy to carry around, moreso than the other components; so when each member of the

"Mortar Squad" determines where the "Baseplate" has been emplaced, the remainder of the Team will assemble on the

Baseplate.

The "Mortar section NCO" has arrived with his Mortar "Transit" and "Sight", and while the "Baseplate Carrier"

(Ammo Bearer #1) goes to get ammo, "The young Sarge" will assemble all the Mortar components.

The Mortar "Gunner" brought over the "gun tube" (pipe)....and then he went to get more ammunition.

He brings together all necessary Mortar components, so he can speed a correct Mortar assembly.

The "Mortar section NCO" inserts the "gun tube" into the "Transit" and then fastens the tube "collar" and torques the

tension adjustment, to avoid undue amounts of vibration (which vibration would prejudice accuracy in firing).

He places the married assembly of "Gun tube" and "transit" into the Mortar's "Baseplate",

and then secures the locking ring at the baseplate "pivot".

The "Mortar section NCO" moves the Mortar "Transit" legs forward.

He now spreads the bipod legs of the Mortar "Transit".

He pulls up the Mortar's "Sight" from his "Weapons Container".

Positioning the mortar "sight" post for installation.

Installing the Mortar "Sight".

He adjusts the "gun tube" for a beginning median (midline) elevation".

He hears a human voice in his "Weapons Container".

He answers the incoming "radio call" on his "SCR536" Radio (sometimes also called a "PRC-6" Radio).

The other end asks IF the Mortar section is UP...on hearing "Affirmative"...the "FDC" calls out a "direct fire" mission,

laid on to assist in securing the growing "defensive perimeter" shielding the landing "U.S. Paratroopers".

The "Mortar section NCO" barks loudly "I need more Ammo!"...

and begins firing his "mission".

He places the Mortar shell directly over the bore of the Mortar "gun tube".

Anticipating the launching of the mortar round as it slides to the bottom of the Mortar "gun tube",

the "Mortar section NCO" ducks, to prevent injury to his eyes or ears.

Where there is smoke, a round has just been fired!

The "Mortar section NCO" is watching to observe the effect of the fired mortar round as it lands.

Another crew member arrives to crew this mortar gun position.

"Bull" of the "U.S. 101st Airborne Division", is the "Ammo Bearer" for this 4 man Gun Crew.

He arrives with his first Ammunition Crate of 10 x 60mm Mortar shells.

Here comes "Bull"...low crawling with another Ammunition Crate of 10 x 60mm Mortar shells!

Where am I supposed to deliver these, Sergeant?

A "U.S. ARMY 2nd RANGERS" Mortar Pit

10 rounds 60mm Mortar ILLUMINATION shells.

Fires high into the air, 300-1,000 feet, then bursts open with a very bright flare, that descends slowly by Parachute.

High powered U.S. ARMY "Football Stadium Lights"!
