Questions And Response Sequences
Each Tae Kwon Do hyung has a name. The name of the hyung, number
of movements, and in some cases the foot diagram, symbolize either
instances relating to historical events, great heroic individuals in
Korean history, or Korean philosophical points of view.
In order for the student of Tae Kwon Do to better understand the
meaning of each hyung and to give him a better understanding of
Korean history and philosophy and how it relates to Tae Kwon Do,
Grand Master Benko has created a series of question and response
sequences.
In most cases the instructor will ask the questions and the
student who is going to perform the hyung will respond with the
information pertaining to the hyung. If you are practicing the hyung
by yourself you can answer the questions which would be asked of you
were an instructor present. To fully comprehend each hyung the
student must be able to give the correct response to each hyung up
to and including the hyung he is currently learning.
Before each hyung is performed the question and response sequence
is to be given. The word "Instructor" will refer to the
person who will be asking the questions about the hyung. The word
"Student" refers to the person who is going to perform the
hyung. As an example, here is the question and response sequence for
the first Tae Kwon Do hyung, Chon-Ji:
Instructor: Sound off! Student:
Chon-Ji of Tae Kwon Do Hyung.
Instructor: How many
movements? Student: 19.
Instructor: How many
different movements? Student: 3.
Instructor:
What does Chon-Ji mean? Student: Heaven and Earth.
After completing the question and response sequence the
instructor has the student assume the "Choon Bee" (Ready
Position). Upon the instructor's command, the student will perform
the entire hyung, unless specified otherwise by the instructor, and
remain in the last position until the instructor orders the student
back to the hyung's ready position with the command "Par-Row"
(Recover). This order of events will be followed for every hyung.
